Tip of the Week #48
"Always dream and shoot higher than you know you can do. Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself." - William Faulkner Here we are, the start of a new dance season for many of our readers. I'm really excited for you because I know that this year is going to be your best yet. As I thought about what to send in this week's tip I wanted to share sort of a personal struggle I think we all have at one time or another as artists, business owners, parents, friends, and in all the roles we play. That is we get stopped, frustrated, or worried about what 'they' are doing. 'They' could be your competition, your former staff, past students, the list goes on and on. Worrying about what's going on over there...versus what's happening here. You can't control what they're doing. And you can't control what they say or how they act. The good news is there is so much more than you CAN do. You CAN: Be extraordinary Be a leader Be innovative Be generous Be courageous Be inspired No one else can be you - except you. It's so important to get clear on your dance studio mission and vision. Knowing your 'why' is what will allow you to always be bigger than the problem you're solving. This year you're going to have an opportunity to make a huge impact in so many dancers lives. Not just their lives but their families too. You'll hit bumps in the road - as we all do but then you'll remember that you're up to BIG things like keeping the joy and magic of dance alive for people all over the world. Be committed to what you love about the art of dance. Share your vision and mission and spirit of your dance studio in all of your communications with potential and current students. This week's tip: Anytime you feel that twinge of being worried, stressed, or fearful - do something new. Take action on one thing that you've been resisting. Set a bigger goal. Anything is possible. This is what helps me move away from spending time and energy on what I can't control. It's not about putting your head in the sand, in fact it's quite the opposite.
